Walter R. Steiger, Ph.D., is Professor Emeritus of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Hawaii. He also served as Director of the Bishop Museum Planetarium and Science Center after George Bunton's retirement from that position, and subsequently, as Manager of the Caltech Submillimeter Observatory on Mauna Kea.

George W. Bunton was for many years the Director of the Bishop Museum Planetarium and Science Center in Honolulu. He retired in 1981, and died on February 21, 1995. He was the true inspiration behind this paper and saw the original version completed just before his death.
